Jonah Hanig Qualifies For State Cross Country Meet

Saturday, October 29 2011 - IHSA 3A Boy's Cross Country Sectionals - Schaumburg

Highland Park junior Jonah Hanig qualified for the IHSA 3A State Cross Country Meet by placing 16th at the Schaumburg Sectional.   He covered the course in 15:33.15.  Jonah was the 6th individual qualifier from the very challenging sectional.   Jonah’s race plan was to go out with the lead pack and then try to stay as close to the top ten as possible.   After a very strong start, Jonah found himself around 11th for a good portion of the race.   He struggled to keep pace with the runners around him during the final half mile of the race, but was able to hang on for a state qualifying place.   Jonah came into the sectional race with a foot tendon injury that flared up on Wednesday, but all of his hard work and focus since last cross country season helped him overcome this obstacle.

The team results did not go as well.   The Giants ran well through the top four, but then fell off after that.   The top seven included:  Emmett Smith (16:09.22 52nd), Angel Estrada (16:27.05 75th), Ari Feldman (16:29.22 80th), Ian Jacobs (16:57.46 125th), Luke Nudelman (17:03.47 133rd), and Dodge Brown (17:21.48 148th).

So proud of Jonah. He's shown a lot of maturity this year sliding into the number one slot and racing more consistently than he ever has before. Can't wait to see him race at Detweiller Park on Saturday. He absolutely belongs there.
